How do I check my student email and what is my address?
You can check your student email account from any computer that has Internet access. Open your Internet browser and log into the Student Portal. At the top you should see an email tab, when you click on the email tab a new window containing your email will popup. Your email address is your Portal user name followed by "@my.sf.coloradotech.edu" (John.Doe@my.sf.coloradotech.edu).

How do I use one of the printers at CTU ?
Every classroom on campus is equipped with a laser printer. To use a printer, click File>Print in the menu bar of the application. Then choose the printer from the available list and click the Print button. The printers are named with the room number. For example if you want to use the Room 131 printer, choose the printer named CTUSF_HP131.

How can I troubleshoot "Page Cannot Be Displayed" errors?
If you get a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error trying to open a web page, either the page may have moved or misspelled, or you may not have a connection to the Internet. Depending on how you connect to the Internet, right-click on either the LAN
or Wireless
icon in the notification area and choose Status. Click the Support tab, and then the Repair button. Windows will attempt to repair the connection. If it still does not work when the repair is complete, try restarting your computer. If it still does not work and you are at home, you may need to contact your Internet service provider. If you are at CTU, bring your laptop to the Helpdesk.

What is spyware?
Spyware is a term that describes software that delivers advertisements, collects personal information, or changes the configuration of your computer. These programs are usually installed without your knowledge or consent. If you are experiencing one or more of the following symptoms, your computer may be infected with spyware:
- You see pop-up ads constantly, even when you are not browsing the web.
- Your computer is running extremely slow.
- Programs are crashing frequently.
- You notice a new browser toolbar that you don’t remember installing.

How do I prevent spyware from getting on my computer?
The best defense against spyware is not to download it in the first place.
Here are a few tips:
- Close pop-up ads by clicking the “X” in the corner; never click "Agree" or "OK" to close a window.
- Only download programs from web sites you trust.
- Read all security warnings, license agreements, and privacy statements before you download any software – especially when downloading freeware or shareware.
- Don’t install peer to peer file sharing (P2P) programs.

How do I get spyware off of my computer?
Most unwanted programs can be removed from your system through the Control Panel’s Add or Remove Programs applet. Click Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs. A list of the currently installed programs on your computer is displayed. Select the program to remove and click the Remove button. If this doesn’t work or you don’t see the offending program, you may need to install a spyware removal tool. Windows Defender is one choice.

How do I allow pop-ups from websites I trust?
The new Windows XP Service Pack (SP2) includes a pop-up blocker. This feature can potentially cause problems with Blackboard, CTU Web mail, and the Student Portal.
In Internet Explorer, click on the Tools Menu, point to Pop-up Blocker , and then click Pop-up Blocker Settings.
In the "Address of Web site to allow" field, enter *.ctusf.org and click the Add button. You may also want to add *.sf.coloradotech.edu to the list. Download the instructions.

What is a Peer to Peer (P2P) application?
Peer to peer applications are programs that enable users to share files over a network. Typically a directory on each computer is "shared" and other computers running the same program can search the contents of and download files from these shared directories.

Why are Peer to Peer applications bad?
Most of the files that people share on peer to peer networks are unauthorized copies of copyrighted music and movies. The sharing of these materials is illegal. Also, many viruses are transmitted via P2P networks. Additionally, most P2P applications come bundled with spyware that slows down your computer and causes popups. Not to mention that installing a peer to peer is a violation of the Electronic Information Policy.

What is Windows Update?
Once a month, Microsoft releases updates for Windows operating system software and Windows-based hardware. Updates address known issues and help protect against known security threats. Most of the viruses and worms in existence are exploits of these known issues. Your computer is set to download these updates automatically.
When you see the Windows update icon
down by your clock, it means that the Windows updates have been downloaded and are ready to be installed. Double-click the icon to install the updates. By keeping your system up to date, you lessen the chance of your computer becoming infected.

What is this software restriction policy warning?
In an effort to curb the use of unauthorized software, CTU has put a software restriction policy in effect. If you get a message similar to the one displayed here, it is because the application you are attempting to run is not on the list of approved applications. If you believe the application you are attempting to run should be on the approved list, feel free to contact a member of the Helpdesk or complete THIS FORM and email it to helpdesk@ctusf.org.

Why can <person> run <program>, but I cannot?
Periodically programs are added to the approved list, but your computer may not “know” about it. To get the most current list, while you are on-campus click Start>Run. In the Run box type gpupdate /force then click the OK button. A window will open and your computer will download the current policy settings. After it is finished, you are prompted to logoff (Y or N). Type Y and press enter. You will be logged off. Log back in and try the application again. If you still get the warning, then the application is not on the approved list. If you believe the application you are attempting to run should be on the approved list, feel free to contact a member of the Helpdesk or complete this form and email it to helpdesk@ctusf.org.

What is an End User License Agreement (EULA)?
A EULA is a legal contract between the manufacturer and/or the author and the end user of an application. The EULA details how the software can and cannot be used and any restrictions that the manufacturer imposes. For example, most EULA’s prohibit the user from sharing the software with anyone else or installing it on multiple computers.

I paid for <application>, so why can’t I install it on my computer?
Since the computers are owned by the University, any software installed on them needs to be licensed to CTU. When you purchase a program it is licensed to you, not the University. Installing it on a system owned by CTU violates the End User License Agreement (EULA).

If Yahoo Messenger is not allowed, how can I chat with my Yahoo friends?
The EULA states that Yahoo Messenger is only allowed for personal use. Installing it on the CTU-owned laptop would violate that license agreement. How do I work with compressed (zipped) files?
To create a zipped compressed folder: Open My Computer. Double-click a drive or folder. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Compressed (zipped) Folder. Type a name for the new folder, and then press ENTER. Note: You can also create a zipped compressed folder by right-clicking the desktop, pointing to New, and then clicking Compressed (zipped) Folder.
To extract files from a zipped compressed folder: Open My Computer and then locate the compressed folder. To extract a single file or folder, double-click the compressed folder to open it. Then, drag the file or folder from the compressed folder to a new location. To extract all files or folders, right-click the compressed folder, and then click Extract All. In the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard, specify where you want to store the extracted files.
